Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
