Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
