Powerful Winds Cause Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the region.

Severe gusts attaining velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 households lacking electricity and compelled agencies to call off more than 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the whole southern region and lower areas of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and prepare for more electricity and network failures.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the South Island, although officials report that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was blown onto approaching vehicles on a road by a intensive burst, in a incident that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been cancelled as a result of the winds, while certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Labor Protests During Severe Weather

The powerful gales on today come as many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been called a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

Yet the intense climate has pressured them to modify certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings moved indoors or cancelled.

Like conditions are affecting the nearby nation, bringing a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced fire bans for concern about forest fires.
